Perhaps the Perfect Summer Running Camp Area

July 13-20 for the Week and July 20-22, 2012 for the Weekend Retreat.

See our video from 2010!

See photos from past years!

Join Jeff and his guests for a refreshing, invigorating stay in beautiful Squaw Valley at the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The friendly 2012 presenters may include Joe Henderson (Marathon & Beyond), Dr. Gary Moran (Physiology and Strength Training), Dr. David Hannaford (podiatrist) and Sister Marion Irvine.

Everyone stays at the beautiful and comfortable Squaw Valley Lodge. Lodge amenities include indoor and outdoor hot tubs, swimming, tennis, sauna and fitness room.

Week and Weekend running camps begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday with an easy run to get acquainted. Both running camps end after breakfast on the last day.

Each morning begins with a run or walk in a different nearby location. Breakfast is followed by clinics by Jeff and his guests. Seminar topics include Running Injury Free, Nutrition, Speed work, Goal setting, Shoe selection, Pool running, and Running form/analysis. Feel free to ask questions, and even request a topic to be discussed.

After lunch, you may shop, sightsee, sun by the pool, or join the group for a scenic hike, T-shirt swap, bike ride, river raft ride, etc. The group (@40) gathers again in the evenings for dinner onsite or at one of the nearby restaurants and after-dinner relaxing.

FAQ's

When do the running camps begin and end?
Both the week and weekend camps begin at 5 p.m. on Friday with a get- acquainted run. Week camp ends after breakfast on the following Friday, and weekend camp ends after breakfast on Sunday. Check out time is 11 a.m.

What does the fee include?
Your fee includes lodging at Squaw Valley Lodge, all seminars, all meals for the weekend or all meals for the week except Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday dinners. Airfare and airport transportation fees are not included.

Are non-running spouses and family welcome at the retreats?
Absolutely! The Squaw Valley/ Lake Tahoe area has so much to offer vacationers. Your non-running spouse/family will have many activities to choose from while you are attending the Camp Seminars. You would pay the single rate for Camp, and your spouse/family would pay only for meals if they choose to eat with the Campers.

Do I need to rent a car?
You do not need a car, as airport shuttles run on the hour from the Reno Airport to Squaw Valley. Shuttle fees are approximately $60 each way. If you want to be able to explore the Lake area, you will often find that you can rent a car for the week less expensively than riding the shuttle each way. Squaw Valley also has trolley service into Tahoe City.

What are the accommodations like at the Lodge?
All rooms are Deluxe Studios, which offer a full kitchen. There is a queen bed and a queen sofa bed. If you opt for a double with a roommate, please note that there is one bed and one sofa bed.

What is a typical day at camp?
In general, each day follows a similar format: 6 a.m. run, 8 a.m. breakfast, 9 a.m.-12 noon seminars, 12 noon lunch, 1 p.m. hike, or free time to sun, swim, shop, etc. Dinner is at 6 p.m., and the evening is free after dinner. Read Gary's camp diary.

How far do we run each day?
We have a 6 a.m. run each morning in a different location in the Valley or around the Lake. Some runs are on trails, some on asphalt. Generally, we run out 30 minutes and back 30 minutes to be back in time for a quick shower and breakfast. All runs are out and back, and you can go as long or as short as you like.

What is the food like?

Our food is all catered by the award winning Twin Peaks Catering Co. All meals are served at the Lodge. The food is delicious and healthy (except desserts!), and there is a vegetarian option at all meals. Mike, the owner of the catering company, is a runner and tries to squeeze in time to run with us when he is able.

How many people attend?
The trend may change from year to year, but generally there are 35-40 campers during the week and 20-25 during the weekend. We have runners of all ages and speeds!

Are shops/restaurants within walking distance?
Yes, the recently opened Village at Squaw Valley is within a stone’s throw from the Lodge and includes a general store, specialty shops and 5 or 6 restaurants (Starbucks too!). High Camp with ice skating, bungee jumping, hiking and dining is a tram ride up the mountain from the Lodge.

What is the weather like in July?
The mornings are cool-usually in the 40’s. A long-sleeved shirt is usually all you need for the morning runs. Afternoon temps are usually high 60’s-mid 70’s, and a sweater would be appropriate for the cool evenings.

Is there free time?
Yes, there is free time in the afternoons and after dinner. And, all runs, seminars, and hikes are optional. The Squaw Valley/Lake Tahoe area offers hiking, biking (road or mountain), golf, river rafting, shopping and dinner cruises on Lake Tahoe, to name a few options.
